Diabetes Education Services
Field Memorial Community Hospital is part of a network that has received a three-year federal grant to expand educational services and medical care for diabetics in Adams, Amite, Jefferson, and Wilkinson Counties. The Rural Health Outreach project is being funded through April 2005 for a network involving Field Memorial, Alcorn State University School of Nursing, and Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center.

Field Memorial Outpatient Program Specialist Jewel Causey, a registered dietician and certified diabetic educator, is currently the only certified diabetic educator in Wilk-Amite Counties. She is active in the Rural Health Outreach project, and her efforts are geared to creating an outpatient diabetic education department at Field Memorial that will be recognized by the American Diabetes Association. She has already been instrumental in developing diabetes support groups in the area, and in providing diabetes screenings and educational materials through community events, schools, churches, and other associations.

As a certified diabetes educator, Jewel Causey provides individualized instruction on self-monitoring, meal planning, medications, exercise, and self-care, and works with patients through referral by physicians. Call her for more information on her individual services, as well as local diabetes education opportunities, activities, and support groups.
